ANTHONY CULLEN ART

Notebook on Popular Culture

Between the ages of five and ten, I spent weeks away from my family in an orthopaedic hospital due to an injury to my arm. I acknowledge that the challenges were minor compared to those of other children in the hospital, some of whom suffered spinal injuries and underwent amputations. The space had a significant impact on my identity growing up. Through this work, I act as both subject and witness.

I also noticed that the children with less mobility had to watch a lot of television in the evening and didn’t seem to resist it too much. It was, however, rarely that of their choosing and was often adult-themed. I drew a notebook, recalling the type of content that they were exposed to present a better understanding of the space they occupied.

I got an opportunity to show the notebook at the Cork Opera House in April 2025.
